What can happen to my mother if she has no desire to live?

My mother seems to have given up. She has diabetes, but it can be managed.

Dear tlc,

I know its hard to see your mom give up on life. But please don't give up on your mom no matter what she says. I think having diabetes is tough. Although it can be managed, there are a lot of restrictions on the diet and meal times and this can be depressing for your mom.

I would consider having your checked out by the doctor again. Review her meds for possible side effects. Get her out of the house and engaged. Maybe have her talk to a social worker, therapist or counsellor. I know its not easy but try for your mom's sake.

I tried for my dad even though I was not successful in turning around his mood. I don't know if part of it was his age, he was in his 80s. Now that he has passed, I wished I had tried more.

What can happen to her...

Well that would depend on how old she is, how poorly controlled her diabetes is, what her lifestyle is like...

I'm sorry to read here and on the other thread that you are afraid that your mother has given up. But without any information about what makes you think so, and what your mother's situation is, it's virtually impossible to comment. Could you say a little more about your concerns for her?

Can you provide more information about your mom, like is she thinking clearly or does she have dementia too? Has she been checked for depression? Sometimes, depression can cause people to have little interest in life. I'd have her doctor check her out and rule out any other issues, besides the diabetes. If her blood sugars are not well controlled, it can cause you to feel really bad. It's more difficult for some people to control their diabetes than others. If she's able, a good endocrinologist can make a world of difference. Also, a support group is helpful as well as lots of reading material. I'm Type I and it's a hard job.
