I can't afford $20 an hour, because they require about 20 hours a week. In all my searches, I've ended up with care coming out (while I'm at work) probably not the best scenario...and an appointment with a free lawyer consultation to see how to liquidate our assets. Alone, he makes about $23,000.00. with me, we make about $73,000.00 and I have a few assets in life insurance and retirement accounts. I don't want to use all we have to help his situation at the expense of hurting my own. I will not have the support he has as I age. I'm 17 years younger than him and we've been married 36 years. I'm frustrated and depressed as a caregiver...not really my forte. I'm tired as I work full time as a teacher, and am his main lifeline. So my concern is...am I even on the right path for finding help for him?

Find Care & Housing
Keep looking around for different agencies. The one I use (central NY) has a minimum 3 hour visit, and I am only using them once a week. They would charge $25 /hour for an aid qualified to bathe etc.
Also you might find an independent service that would have lower hourly minimums. Try care.com.

The shower probably shouldn't take three hours. Some posters have said that there are difficulties with podiatry, but with luck the nail trimming will be an option - just not every week. It might be a good idea to think through a 'job description' that would take up the rest of the minimum call-out time. It could be a lot easier than trying to 'add-on' extra functions when you realise that there is a lot of spare time.
