very good question, though not a regular occurrence it happens on occasion with my mom. It is usually triggered when she understands how profound her memory loss is and she doesn't think she is good for anything. She thinks that she is a terrible mother or her little girls would all still be living here (we are all in our 50's). All I can do is to remind her that she is loved by so many people and assure her that everything is ok.

My mother still has those days where she says I wish I would hurry up and die and end this misery. Right after my father passed away she told a doctor in the hospital that she just lost her husband of fifty years and would like to die, and then asked him can you help me with that? He told her no, I actually lean in the other direction of saving life. LOL great response. He sent her to the geriatric pysch ward for two weeks they stabilized her medication and gave her grief counseling which seemed to help. Do you have any idea why she is feeling so down? Has it been going on for awhile or is it recent?

It is so hard to see someone you love in a depressed state. You wrote that she is on meds, I'm assuming the medications are for depression. Has the doctor tried switching her to a different antidepressant? Not all antidepressants are effective for a person, what works for one person may not help the next person. Finding the antidepressant that works for a person is sometimes a matter of trying one and if it doesn't help, after sufficient time, changing to another. Sometimes changing again. There are lots of antidepressants and no effective means of knowing ahead of time which one will work for that particular person. I'd suggest talking with her doctor about trying a different medication if what she is taking isn't relieving her depression. Is there mental health counseling in your area? She might benefit from that in addition to medication.
