What kind of help do you think he needs? You might contact someone to do an assessment. Depending on his progression, they can determine what he needs in the home and if mom is able to continue to care for him there, with others coming in to help as Pamstegma said.

Sometimes adult day care can offer the caretaker some rest during the day and a chance to run errands or to get support. The Alzheimers Association hotline may offer you some info on support groups in Raleigh.

Dementia is a pretty broad term. First his MD needs to find the cause, such as vascular or lewy body or Alzheimer's. Usually this means referral to a Neurologist. For mom, I recommend some in home help to take the pressure off her. The MD can write an order for a weekly bath aide for Dad. You could hire a housekeeper for her once a week to do the heavy cleaning. And of course, regular calls from you and other siblings help a lot.
