MZSTELLA Asked October 2015

Where to find a day program that would engage my spouse in activities w/others in the NW Detroit area?

Want a day facility that would allow my husband to have meaningful interaction w/others who may have early dementia or impairment. I sub occasionally and would appreciate having a place for him to be gainfully occupied rather than home alone.

I went to our local Senior Center and they gave me all kinds of helpful information. They had pamphlets for the Center of Aging and the Alzheimer's Association local chapters. If you use a computer, there is a lot there too of course.

MzStella, if you come, here are a few tips:

1. Wear good, sturdy, comfortable walking shoes.

2. Bring one of those little luggage carriers on wheels, that you can pull behind you, to put all the literature and (lots and lots of) goodies in.

First few times I ended up so with much literature that I wanted to read over I was carrying it in 2 -3 bags and literally dragging it because it became so heavy. Exhibitors generally have a lot of literature to hand out.

BTW, I use the cloth bags available for free from exhibitors for grocery bags; they serve that purpose well.

Don't forget to get the free bagels in the center section as you enter the large exhibitors' room.

Yes if you can attend this confrence this sat that GardenArtist mentioned you will find a place. So much info at this expo try to come if you can. But it will be crowded and the have caregivers there to watch your husband so you can enjoy the conference.

A few years ago there was a day program here;

Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program of JVS

or

Area Agency on Aging 1-B
248.357.2255

See also this post. There will be exhibitors there, most likely the JVS:

Family Caregiver conference:

We are all from different states and countries. Like the above answer you need to call your Office of Aging.
