My dad is in a long stay hospital and developed a sore bum. It was recommended we pick up some baby wipes for sensitive skin. Does anyone have a brand that has been good for very sensitive skin that is raw?

For commercial Products, Water-based pampers sensitive skin are not irritating and can be used with any unscented soap/Water … or foam no Rinse cleaner.
For very irritated/Damaged skin breakdown I've had very good luck using Theraworx Protect Advanced Hygiene and Barrier cleanser. Several products available. Spray is most economical, You can always mix with water -Instant foam.

I have babies at home, and have been knee-deep in baby diapers for a good long while. If you’re looking for the best at soothing a sore bum, it’s not the wipes, but the ointment you put on AFTER the wipe.

We tried several, and we were given this one by a friend and we never bought another kind again. Badger Baby Balm. It’s like a miracle. It soothes immediately after application (my boys would be screaming because of a sore bum, and then instantly stop when the balm goes on). It has beeswax, which provides a waterproof layer.

Trust me. This stuff is gold.

My husband had this problem off and on for years and his favorite was Assurance Premium Washcloths after trying several other brands. They aren't baby wipes. Good sized at 12" x 8", not too thin and easy to get out of the package. I always packed these for hospital stays and he used them at home too. Oftentimes he would develop rawness all the way up to his scrotum so check that as well. If you aren't comfortable with checking yourself, have a nurse or tech do it. Good luck and take good care.

One other thing came to mind ... is he sleeping on a mattress that pushes air through to prevent bed sores and/or a medical grade sheepskin? I first purchased from Even Pressure when my dad was in a wheelchair for his chair and his bed. I have sent to other family members and friends and they have prevented bed sores and helped with healing after I learned some had bed sores. This is the online link: https://evenpressure.com/ and you can also reach by phone at 205+758-2740. Good investment.

nikkimgs: Imho, oftentimes the best place to shop for items like this is an elder specialty store. There was one available to me near my late mother's state of Massachusetts, which offered products for elders.

I used a brand that had tea tree oil and it helped. Then, after trying about every kind of barrier cream, zinc oxide ointment, butt paste, and petroleum based, etc - I got some Lantaseptic. Ordered it online Amazon and it was the real deal. It contains lanolin and cleared things up.

Additionally, with the wipes, I figure they all contain about the same thing for cleansing. Avoid perfumed. I now buy the adult wipes from Sam's. 5 packs for about $9. They are the largest I found. Kid wipes are quite small. Sam's had this large size and cheapest price.

My daughter is using Pampers Natural Sensitive for her baby who gets diaper rash often.

As an RN, there are a few other suggestions for raw skin:
1 - Make sure he has a mild soap, like baby soap, for washing up.
2 - Make sure that they are allowing his skin to dry thoroughly after bathing.
3 - If he has little blisters or white spots on his skin, he may need a medicated cream for a yeast infection.
4 - If his skin is raw, he would do better with petroleum cream lightly applied over the reddened skin. It will keep his skin from getting further irritated by urine or fecal matter.
5 - When you are there, ask to see the reddened skin yourself, If the skin looks bad to you, ask for a referral with a wound specialist - a nurse or doctor who has access more products and prescription-writing "power" to make sure this gets healed.

IMO, any hypoallergenic wipes will work, but I find that the thicker ones are better than the thin ones. I use generics. They sell small packs of wipes; so, you can buy a few different ones and see what works best.

In re: sore bum.
Please check for pressure sore or redness, which could be precursor to pressure sore. Pressure sores can materialize overnight. They must be treated asap.

I recommend Mediseptic and Boudreau's Butt Paste. I also sprinkle powder, but some people are against powder.
There's also a prescription anti fungal medicated powder, Nystatin, if it gets bad; you may find this otc. But hospice should provide and pay for scripts, if in the USA.

Keep dad dry as much as possible. Either go commando (might not be an option), have periods where he lays on side to air out his bum, or frequent diaper changes, applying the creams and powder each time after a good washing.

They also make this spray cleaner for bed baths that hospice showed me; it's incredible in making poo come off the skin easy. His bum probably hurts from all the wiping too, so some spray may help because you have to wipe less and not so rough when using it.

If it's a lot of pain, try letting him sit on and ice pack (GEL ONLY) for 15 minutes at a time (with his diaper on or a soft towel.) Never put ice packs directly on the skin - you may know this already.

In addition to my previous post per my moms dermatologist and her home care RN Calmoseptine ointment is the best and it protects, soothes and helps promote healing. I use it every day after cleaning my mother. Works very well. Costco 4 oz. tube and cost $5.19. Better price than CVS.

Follow wiping with Neem salve. THERE IS NOTHING THAT WORKS BETTER, HEALS QUICKER AND FEELS PAINLESS TO APPLY. The barrier creams are all thick like toothpaste, can you imagine how that feels being applied to raw tender skin? It causes more pain.

I use the Walmart Brand - Equate wipes - they work good. Also go and buy a jar of Healing Eucarin cream and rub that on him after he is cleaned. It heals fast, stops the red pain, and is a great product - I use it daily.

In addition to better wipes and creams, your Dad should be given a sitz bath if at all possible. Or a modified sitz bath, using a hand held shower wand to run warm water to help heal the raw areas, 2 x per day at first. It increases circulation and will clean his bum from all the chemicals. Then dry with a cool or slightly warm hair dryer or air dry, no wiping.

If he can still use the toilet, there are sitz bath tubs for the toilet, but I have never seen them.

There are hemorrhoid wipes that may sooth the irritation for now.
Preparation H contains Witch Hazel, an astringent that helps relieve the local itching and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids

temporary relief of irritation and burning

aids in protecting irritated anorectal areas.

Ask his doctor or nurse.

My mothers dermatologist recommended Aquanil Cleanser for sensitive skin, it is free from irritating soaps. My mother was irritated and he told me not to use baby wipes which I was using every day. I have been using this product for over a year and her skin is free from any irritation. It is over the counter and I purchased it from Costco. I use a warm warm wash cloth with small amount liquid and then rinse. We do use a lot of facecloths, though but it works for my moms sensitive skin. I just looked up Water Wipes recommended by FamilyNeeded and it seems like a decent product, only two ingredients water and fruit extract. Good luck.

The best wipes I have found are called WaterWipes! They do not have any of the harmful chemicals that you often find in other wipes. If you do use other wipes a trick a nurse taught me is to first run them under warm water. This warms the wipe and also removes some of the chemicals.

Has the hospital sent a wound care nurse in to evaluate him? Also, along with the other recommendations, you should ask to have his protein levels checked. If there is a nutritional problem related to his medical condition, it could contribute to lack of healing.

When my husband was in the hospital he developed really bad bed sores on his bottom. They used Medihoney gel on them and it helped. I think it would be good to use between wipes to prevent bed sores too.

I'm surprised the hospital doesn't provide (and put on your father)! They have to do this for bed sores. Speak to the administrator or nurse supervisor...immediately!!! They should be doing it BEFORE he gets the bed sores! Good luck.

Don't know where the OP is, but if in the US, Medicare (CMS) takes a very dim view of hospital staff allowing bedsores to develop. So I agree - contact the nurse manager or patient advocate & inform them of his skin problem. Once home, wipes & special cleansers will be helpful, but wound care nurse needs to be notified.

I don’t have a specific brand but I’d also recommend you get some 5% dimethicone cream as protection for his skin in between cleanings. I get Smith&Nephew Secura brand on Amazon. You can also get it through medical supply companies. If you browse some of those companies they have all kinds of products for bedridden folks so you may find wipes there as well.

The hospital should be providing the wipes needed AND keeping a close eye for bedsores. My husband ended up with a very sore rear end which then turned into an area with a nasty bedsore after a 3 month hospital stay. The hospital used Medline Readyflush Protect personal cleansing cloths. They made a world of difference. Also, after bathing, the nurses or techs applied Thera Calazinc Body Shield for further protection. Worked wonderfully. I can send pictures of both if needed.

I used the wipes that Hospice provided (we never had a problem with redness) but I did gently apply a bit of a barrier cream each time. I used a combination that I mixed from 2 others. About a 50/50 mix of Desitin and A&D. I would pat it on not rub it on. And just a very light amount. The more you put on the more difficult it is to get off when washing the body.
I also used microfiber cloths rather than wash cloths. Much softer than any other cloth. I would buy them at the "big box hardware store" when they had them for something like $3.00 for a bundle of them.
Any "generic" "sensitive baby wipe should be fine. I would look for the largest size. The dimension's are on the box. And look for one with no perfumes. I do like the ones made with Tencel they seem softer and stronger.

There are also very good disposable wipes moistened with PLAIN WATER, and marked as such. We use

If you cleanse the area with a totally neutral moist product he may be able to benefit from more focused application of additional targeted treatments.

So difficult and disturbing for him. Hope you see some improvement very soon.

Calmoseptine (Walgreens has a generic version) has cleared my dad’s rashes and sores quickly. You can find it in the adult diaper section. Really the best thing I have found.
