Your loved one may not require home care or assisted living services at this time. However, continue to monitor their condition for changes and consider occasional in-home care services for help as needed.

Share a few details and we will match you to trusted home care in your area:
Bananas! They provide potassium which gets depleted in the diarrhea. Bananas also help to firm up the bowel movements. Either feed him bananas whole or added to dishes. Banachol, a powdered banana powder used in hospitals, or banana powder can be added to everything to help his bm to "firm up".
Keep track of what he has consumed via liquids or solids on the days he has diarrhea. For my husband, cranberry-apple juice in large quantities (20 ounces or more) and caffeinated coffee were the causes. For constant diarrhea, a condition called c-diff can be a cause.
Coffee is well known for its ability to speed up motility. (I really struggled to find a way to put this nicely!) It can be a help to anyone who has a problem with constipation, but it's best drunk very early in the morning for that reason, or straight away after returning home from work. It's best avoided it a person has an upset stomach. Tea is better for you. Even though it also has caffeine, it's not as concentrated and tea is more hydrating. Peppermint tea is excellent for soothing the digestive system.
Imodium as needed. Also, for 'raging' diarrhea, a dose of a few days of a narcotic will slow things down. Just be careful not to overdo those or you'll facing constipation, which can be equally awful.
My Dh has horrible diarrhea from time to time--Luckily he's totally with the program and he gets this when he eats too many sweets and esp when he eats a LOT of dairy. He knows the triggers but eats them anyway.
One thing helped was I finally refused to clean up after him and he has to shower himself and clean whatever clothing got hit and also the toilet. Sure makes him more careful.
If he were to become unaware of his bodily functions, things would be different.
If there is no medical cause..ie, medications or other GI problem is there something that he is eating that will set this off? And how long does the episode last? I have to tell you after going through more days of constipation with my Husband I would have wanted an OCASSIONAL bout of diarrhea. The important thing, if he is incontinent and wearing absorbent briefs make sure he is cleaned very well, lots of "nooks and crannies" and skin irritation is possible. Using a barrier cream will help but pat it on lightly do not rub it on thick.
You can try the higher fiber meals or adding things that have a higher fiber. And you can try some of the OTC products for diarrhea that might help.
And bland diet. Banana, rice, toast, saltine crackers with a little butter, red jello, graham crackers, bouillon cubes that make chicken broth (loads of sodium), or chicken and rice soup. Vanilla wafers, electrolyte beverages and just plain ginger ale and 7 up or sprite. Imodium per the package directions. Decrease stressful environment, nature tv shows or Smithsonian with cruise ships and trains. Minimize stress and children and pets unless they bring calm.

Feed probiotic rich foods and drink, it helps heal whatever is causing the upset.
