Years ago, I made complaint regarding the mistreatment of my late mother (sexual abuse). I've now received a reply saying they are not taking further action. What can I do?

Find Care & Housing
See an attorney so that you can hear again, and from someone with great knowledge in the matter, that there is nothing now to be done.
Then get on with your life.

I do not want to discourage you from following up with a lawyer but...
You made the report "years ago"
Your mother has died..
The reply is they are not taking further action.
There probably is not much they can do.
I do hope that a lawyer might have better news for you.

Mom died May 2021. You mention June 21 that she was assalted. March 2024 you say her abuse has been confirmed and you filed a complaint with New Zealand Health and Disability Commissioner. Now its June 2025 and I guess the Commissioner has said they aren't taking further action.

Maybe you filed too late? Maybe there is a timeline? A statute of limitations. It was almost 3 years after Moms death that u filed. Also in that time staff probably has come and gone. In the 20yrs my daughter has worked she has worked in a lot of different nursing homes. Trying to locate staff from that time, who are gone, would be very hard. Not just that, but the women this resident abused have probably passed or so deep into their Dementia they are not good witnesses. The abuser may have passed.

It is hard to know if those suffering from Dementia are telling the truth. I hate saying this, but you may just have to let it go. No lawyer will take on this case where there is nothing written down or people to verify the story. If one did, it would cost you thousands and maybe ending up with nothing to show for the time and money you spent. All I can say is, I am so sorry that you are going thru this.

Your mother has passed, hasn't she? What "reply now says not taking further"......? You may want to elaborate. Hopefully the police were involved in this case.
