Husband died from Alz. and she's worn out and thinks this would be a big and unnecessary chore since the accts (utilities, papers, magazines, etc.) are paid automatically from either their bank acct or credit card. Anyone have an answer?

I agree with FF; eventually your friend can change the accounts by providing certified copies of the Death Certificate, but she can also take time to recover her own health first.

I don't think the utilities, newpapers, magazines care who's names are on the accounts as long as they are getting paid. Example, I am paying some of my parents bills and Dad is reimbursing me, and my name isn't on any of the accounts.

The only caution is making sure that if credit cards have husband's name on them, that the credit card agencies be notified so no one can try to get credit in the deceased husband's name besides his wife. There are unscrupulous people who will try to access dead people's info to enrich themselves.

Unless one of the vendors / payees demand that it be done, have her just keep on the current system & take as much time as she needs to.

Do make sure that she orders lots of death certificates in the inital request for them. Everbody will want an "original" one. If she has a home, CC, multiple bank or investments, I'd say get at least 20. Plus 1 for every child to have.

I guess it depends. One of our family friends tried to change the service on her phone account after her husband died 8 years after his death. The account was still in his name, but she wanted to change a feature on the phone service. They would not allow her to do it and when told husband was dead, she had to change the account.
