Do I have to send mom's last SSA check back?

Hey guys my mom just recently passed away on July 16. She received a check from SSA on July 26. Do I have to send that check back to them?

This is how I understood it. The check you receive in July is your June check. Just like if you worked. Like said, leave the money in his account but questioned if it's June's check and the take back. Like said SSA have made mistakes.

Ok i read on SSA website it stated that If a person dies lets say July 1st or the middle of the month and they received a direct deposit in their account July 23rd. They are entitled to that money because they live the whole entire month of June. But if they receive a deposit in August that money has to be return because they didn't live the whole month of July.

My Dad had passed on the 19th of a month, and a couple days later Social Security took back the money they had direct deposited.

DWoodson is right, though the banks or even the SSA can make mistakes. I would leave the money in the account for a couple of months to make sure that they aren't going to take it back. I don't know why the mistakes get made, but it can cause problems if there is an overdraft or the account is closed.

Ok. But i keep hearing different things. If the decedent dies with in the month the money doe not need to be return because the live the whole full previous month which is June.

My heartfelt sympathy on your lost.

Social Security doesn't send out checks any more. Monies are deposited two ways, either direct deposit into checking/savings or via a debit card. If the money is automatically deposited into the bank, then Social Security will automatically take the money back out in a couple of days.

As for the Debit Card, the Social Security amount will be pulled from the Card.
