I checked and apparently CD's and other bank accounts do not have to go through probate if a specific beneficiary is named and is living. If the beneficiary is given as "the estate," then it still has to go through probate to be distributed to the estate. As long as it is a specific person or people, then naming a beneficiary can avoid probate.

I can answer this in part. If an IRA has a beneficiary, then it does not have to go through probate. I suppose the same would be true for a CD, but I don't know for sure.
