Anyone have experience applying for VA Aid & Attendance?

My mother w/ALZ qualifies for spousal VA Aid & Attendance based on her income/assets, but the application process seems daunting. Placement agency will assist w/processing for $850 fee, which seems so steep, but I'm wondering if it would be worth it to streamline approval. Anyone have experience doing it themselves? Was it daunting?! Would appreciate your feedback. Thank you!

Hi there, you can do it for free. It really isn't that bad. I printed the application off of the internet and never left the house. We originally sent in our application in November of 2013. I'm the daughter, and I was applying for the surviving spousal benefits for my mother. Mom had been living with me, and we were originally denied, but I sent in an appeal after my mother moved to assisted living in April. I received the award letter on July 8th, 2014. She received the maximum entitlement amount, and she received retroactive monies from the month we applied. I'm not sure if I can put a live link here www.veteranaid.org/docs/21-526.pdf if this didn't show or is removed, you can go to google, and just type in VA Aid and Attendance application. It is 12 pages, and that includes the instructions. Good Luck!!!! You shouldn't have to pay to have that done. Our process took around 8 months, from start to finish, and that included a denial and appeal.

PS. It took nine months. Once it was approved, the total monthly amount for those nine months was paid retroactively, then the deposits started coming every month. If you search "Veterans Aid" in the search bar at the top of this page, you'll find lots of information.

Hi, N2 --- You can do it yourself. Get the forms from the VA, read and fill them out very, very carefully, make sure that you include all the documents and information the forms ask for. My brother did this for my mother and she was approved. It took several months --- maybe over a year --- but I really don't think these agencies can do it any faster. BUT you have to read carefully, make sure you understand what you read, and respond very precisely to the questions, with documentary support.
