What are the care options for elderly mother with mental health issues for proper placement and flexible accommodation?
My mother is 86 and suffers from paranoid schizophrenia for over three decades. Although she has been on injection and oral medication, her condition has been on the decline. Her "open and loud discussions on conspiracy plots against her" is impossible to endure. Her continual accusations of her husband and daughters cheating her and plotting to kill her is HURTFUL and UNBEARABLE. We do not know if any facilities exist that would place AND accommodate someone with my mother's mental conditions and/or limitations. She is, however, physically mobile with a few complaints of aches and pains. Mother is currently living with my father and my sister, who is THEIR primary caregiver. I visit once a week and help in any which way I can. Thank you kindly for any advice or suggestions for my mom as well as for the sanity of my dad and sister.

What has worked before in your mother's care over 3 decades?
It is common to have need of medication adjustments over time.
Keep her away from the news, re-direct her, and try more supervision, not less.
She could be having a toxic buildup of her current meds.
There are day-care programs, and Board & Care placements for the mentally ill.
Is she on Medicaid? Some financial planning may be in order so as not to leave your father the impoverished spouse. Spending some money on an attorney now can save more money than you know for the future of your father, and the care of your mother.
Your very ill mother is THEIR primary caregiver??? (your father and sister?)
Or they are caregiver to your mother?
