eligibility for VA Pension benefits:
•Mexican Border Period (May 9, 1916 – April 5, 1917 for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or adjacent waters)
•World War I (April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918)
•World War II (December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946)
•Korean conflict (June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955)

eligible periods include
•Vietnam era (February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period; otherwise August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975)
•Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – through a future date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation)

Best just to ask the VA about that facet of eligibility, as well as other requirements.
Don't give up-I understand the application can be made without a lawyer.

When my husband and I called, they told him right off that he did not qualify because he did not serve at least one day during a war.

These rules must be open for changes because what is war, if it is not an officially declared war, but the vet served in active duty in a war zone-or whatever....

Ah yes, pamstegma, I'd forgotten that that thing in Korea was a conflict, altho' how is the ordinary person supposed to know the difference between a war, a conflict, and hostilities? The lines are blurred, aren't they. The Korean conflict substituted for the war in Viet Nam in Mash, the TV series.
