Hi there, My mom (who is 89 and still quite active) is interested in getting a cell phone. She lives in the country, and her landline phone is often not working for one reason or another, and repairs always take a week or more. There is at least 1 Verizon cell tower within 5 miles of her home, so she'd get a signal. I also have a cell phone (Straight Talk) and get a signal in her home, can make calls, etc. I'm 5 hours away from mom and have no car to get to her, and she's at least 90 minutes from a bus station, train, etc.

I want to try and find her a phone with large buttons, nothing fancy...just basic service. There is a small store that carries cell phones but the locals either don't want to help her, know nothing about them, or are "too busy". Is there ANY way I could set one up for her myself? THANK YOU :)
Not sure where this should go, so please feel free to move.

Psalm37v4, hopefully the landline can be fixed sooner than later. With 911, the dispatch will see automatically see the address of where the landline is located. This helps in case someone has a stroke and cannot talk. And landlines the voice quality is so much clearer than cellphones.

I agree with jkm, if your Mom insists on a cellphone, Jitterbug would be the best. Anything else would be too complex. Life is complex enough without having a telephone where you need to remember steps on how to answer it :P

One time I let my Dad use portable land-line phones so he wouldn't need to struggle to get up off the sofa to answer the landlines phone. But Dad would either forget to place the phone back in the cradle at night to recharge or would lose the phone in the house.

My dad had a Jitterbug phone with large number and it would even speak the number as he dialed. You can order them through Greatcall.com and they provide the service. You'd have to check that service was available in her location as I don't know what provider they use. It was mailed to us and there was really no set-up, just recharge it and go. I also loved the button it had where with one press you would be connected to an operator who would ask "Is this an emergency?" and would help with whatever you needed. I registered all his medications and doctors , etc with them and they would contact 911 if necessary. But a couple of times he just asked them to call me as he couldn't enter the number correctly into the phone (he's blind and has lost some sensation in his fingers.) They were always responsive.
