Mom (94) with dementia can't get back into bed in the middle of the night. Does anyone have a solution?

94 year old mom with dementia still uses the bathroom by herself. But when she has to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, she can't get back into bed herself. She calls me every time she gets up which is about every two hours. I'm not sure she really goes every time she gets up. Her problem is that once she sits on the edge of her bed she can't bring her legs up onto the bed. Does anyone have some sort of a solution to this problem other than diapers, she won't wear them. I need to have a night's sleep.

Enabling her to get back into bed might be helpful, but, I'd try to figure out why she's doing it, because, it must be bothersome to her by disrupting her sleep and/or making her physically uncomfortable. It's annoying to get up so much. I've had it happen to me. I'd start with a checkup. Some things that might cause it are UTI, diabetes, medication reaction and sleep apnea. If it's a sleep disorder, they can prescribe something to help stay more restful during the night.

Maybe you need to lower the bed, and maybe a bed assist rail would give her something to hold on to and give her better leverage to pull up her legs.

With dementia, I'd be skeptical of teaching her new techniques for doing things. I might spend a couple of nights getting up with her to see what is actually going on. Is she really using the bathroom? I'd discuss it with her doctor to figure out if this is a bladder problem (overactive) or a sleep disorder. Both can be treated.

If she has strength in her arms, there are straps she can put her feet in and pull her legs up onto the bed. I’ve seen them on home equipment sites.
