Grandma was prescribed Xarelto after being off Coumadin for a year and then getting blood clots in her legs. While it's nice not having to take her to the lab every week or so for tests, the price of the Xarelto is a lot ($184 for a 30 day supply).

The pharmacy keeps telling us we can go online to get a coupon, but I can't find anything that works. I don't know what they're talking about and I even told them that. Those coupons (including GoodRx) actually make the cost higher at over $300. They don't work with insurance and her insurance is covering the bulk of the cost.

Am I missing something here? Is there a way to get it for less? I did check the manufacturers website a while back and Grandma doesn't qualify for any of their special financial assistance programs. She doesn't seem to qualify for anything. She can cover the cost, the issue is just that it's a lot of money for a blood thinner, especially when Coumadin/Warfarin is dirt cheap. If the pharmacy would shut up about the cost everytime I picked it up, I wouldn't be so bothered by it. Personally, I think it's in poor taste for a pharmacy to have any sort of negative reaction (a gasp, comments, etc.) when someone has to pay for an expensive medication on a regular basis. To me, their reaction is the equivalent of rubbing salt in the wound. Yes, I know it's expensive, no need to keep pointing it out.

I agree with the others about Canadian pharmacies: My great aunt got her inhalers for $150 from a Canadian Pharmacy, It was originally $250 in the states.

Both my parents are on it. They wanted something else because of the cost but their doctor said no. He also told them to call the office when they need it and they can get samples. They’ve never had to pay for it since. It’s worth a try

You might consider a Canadian Drug Store Mail order. I checked just one got this result for Xarelto:

2.5mg 100 tabs $195.98 = $1.96/tab = $0.78/mg
10mg 90 tabs $294.47 = $3.27/tab = $0.33/mg
15mg 28 tabs $82.41 = $2.94/tab = $0.20/mg
15mg 56 tabs $155.78 = $2.78/tab = $0.19/mg
15mg 84 tabs $229.14 = $2.73/tab = $0.18/mg
20mg 84 tabs $145.73 = $1.74/tab = $0.09/mg

Your current cost is ?mg 30 tabs @ $184/30 = $6.13/tab

Gotta fax em a prescription. Shipping $9.95. Near as I can tell no generic currently available. I did this for Aricept when it first came out, no generic, saved lotsa money.

I think it was about $90/qtr for 3 qtrs than $500 the 4th qtr. So it cost $770/year and I saved $1230/year.

Talk to her Part D drug program. They may be able to help.

Maybe try a licensed pharmacy in Canada that will ship to the US? The cash price for a 30 day supply of Xarelto is over $500 so honestly I would be surprised if you can find a way to get for less than $184 unless grandma doesn’t have a supplement?

You know what, I forgot to consider that Canadian pharmacies may not be able to take her insurance! So if her insurance is paying for some of the cost and $184 is her out of pocket cost after insurance, I don’t know if a Canadian pharmacy will work!

With insurance via Medicare & her supplement, my mother was paying roughly $84 a month for Xarelto. I could have switched her back to Coumadin if the cost was a problem, but the aggravation factor involved with Coumadin and monthly testing etc was MORE of a bother, to me, than the cost of the Xarelto. I never found coupons or anything else that could be applied (in addition to the lowered cost with insurance) to make the monthly cost even less. If the pharmacist thinks the cost is so high, perhaps HE has a coupon to give you to lower it!! Otherwise, buddy, fill the Rx and let's move on! You're right. Discussing the ridiculous highway robbery we're all involved in with pharmaceuticals these days would be a talk for another day. We have enough on our hands dealing with our folks as it is!!!!
