I came across an article several months ago speaking about a major nerve, the vagal nerve?, one of the largest nerve connecting the gut and the brain. And some studies that showed high levels of bacteria that exist in the gut were also found in or on the brains of some Alzheimer/dementia suffers perhaps having a link between gut bacteria and memory loss in some seniors. The article didn't say that all type Alzheimer/dementia are related to this finding, but possible some could be.

I think there are simple blood tests that can reveal levels of good/bad gut bacteria and when the bad gut bacteria is high or too high. I'm not sure if doctors regularly check for gut bacteria, but maybe they can be asked. Just a consideration. The studies are relatively new.

I have only head about it vaguely and much more research needs to occur, and as others have suggested, ALZ and dementia most likely have more than one source. However, this week I read a article about how the metal used in hip replacements seems to be causing metal toxicity and other problems in the patients. Two of the problems are neurological damage and cognitive impairments! FYI there are proven non-metal alternatives so the patients should ask their surgeon about this.

My fathers wife had a knee replacement and they now think she is allergic to the metal used...I am simply amazed and frustrated that they wouldn't test for that before implanting it in a person when they know some patients end up being allergic to the metal used and there are other material options. Now it will cost her $500 or something (insurance wont pay apparently) to get tested to verify this is the problem, in which case if verified they only option being offered is to redo the replacement. I wonder if other joint replacements like the knee or shoulder are thought to be causing the toxicity you mention as well as hips.

I think that whatever is discovered that taking care of your gut health is so very important.

Probiotics and prebiotics can make a world of difference in how we feel and that leads to healthier more active lifestyles and so on.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

A healthy body can battle many diseases that can kill a compromised body. So many benefits to be had by adding super nutritious foods and supplements to our daily regimens.

As usual, you make an excellent point, Alva.

I think processed food has changed the nature of gut bacteria. The move away from whole foods - where you know and can pronounce all the ingredients - toward preservatives, artificial flavorings and "quick" or "instant" has done much harm.

What about the plastics that have been leaching into our food and water?

Many people also have followed every single fad diet around. And they changed their gut bacteria perhaps irreversibly.

Cheap meat, eggs and dairy are loaded with antibiotics and growth hormones probably also pesticides from the low quality feed. Cannot have helped the gut, which is so rich in blood vessels that everything gets absorbed into the blood.

There will never be a pill to cure the ills we have brought on ourselves as a society due to greed, stupidity and brainwashing.

Yep, NY

My theory has always been, pay now or pay later and why eat ‘fake’ food? Fake food will never be nutritious or satisfying to eat. Pay now for quality and better health or pay later to doctors and hospitals which will cost more.

Americans eat way too much. So adjust the bill by buying less. People overeat. That is why they are so hungry all of the time and grossly overweight.

If finances are a huge issue then it’s different for them. Some people truly cannot afford organic. However, I have been shopping and saw where the organic produce was on sale for less than non organic. People must check prices.

I think that there is a whole lot about the gut genome stuff we don't yet have a clue of. Sadly antibiotics have ruined our natural protections there. On the other hand one has to be very careful of this stuff where suddenly the gut is EVERYTHING, right? It is mental illness, it is auto-immune and etc. Bad deficiencies of good bacteria can kill (C-diff is deadly to those without good gut bacteria) but you can pop all the pills you want to and not replace the good gut bacteria very easily. And I am afraid we cannot consider the gut bacteria the end all and be all in cures, esp when it comes to dementias. Dementia blossoms in the central valley of California, and that's unlikely to be about gut, much more likely to be about dust flying everywhere loaded with chemical poisons and fertilizers. Gut can't cure that stuff.

Medical research is so important. Look at people today that have HIV and AIDS. AIDS used to be a death sentence. My friend’s younger brother was dead in six months. They didn’t know how to treat it long ago. It was a horrible way to die. He suffered horribly. Broke my heart.

Lots of money went into research and look at the difference today for people with HIV and AIDS.

My acupuncturist’s Chinese classmate is one of the lead research scientist in this promising study for treating dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. I understand that the drug in question is Oligommnate which helps modulate bacteria in the gut. The drug is approved for the Chinese market and the pharmaceutical company will be planning larger phase 3 trial in Europe and. the USA Praying that this brings all suffering a ray of a ray of hope!

There has been research hinting at a relationship between bacteria in the brain and dementia for years. The last splash was bacteria that causes periodontal disease found in the brain possibly causing dementia.
