Nothing gets better with dementia, it just gets worse, unfortunately. I'm not sure if you're questioning whether incontinence is advancing quicker, or dementia. Since they're both related, I'd say the dementia is advancing, as it always does. If things become unmanageable for you, please do consider placement.
Yes both dementia and incontinence will only get worse going forward. Make sure that you have a waterproof mattress pad on the bed along with waterproof pads under your loved one while in bed and sitting in any non washable chairs. Dementia sucks! That's the sad reality and I'm sorry you're having to go through this with your loved one.
My dad tried visiting a doctor and taking medication for incontinence, but ultimately nothing helped. He was 90 at the time. He was not going to improve.
He was taken to the bathroom more frequently, given less water, stopped fluids at 5pm, etc. Nothing helped.
Underwear that absorbs fluid that is washable was tried, but did not work for him either.
Using Depends, a pad, waterproof bed pads (chux) and changing him often became his "new normal" unfortunately. It was part of his daily life.
A good pelvic pain PT doctor can help with incontinence. Incontinence symptoms are not a normal part of aging. I’m working with my physical therapist and no longer ‘leak’. No more pads, yay!
