Kimmiee Asked April 2021

My dad (87) lives with my hubby and I. I've taken care of him the past 8 years. I've noticed that he is forgetting a lot. Any advice?

Kimmiee, what type of forgetting is happening? Is it major forgetting, or just odds and ends? If it is odds and ends, that is very normal for someone his age, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Both my sig-other and myself [we are both mid-70's] find we can't remember names like we use to. I just tell myself that all the filing cabinets in our brain are full of information and it just takes longer to find the answer, and sometimes that info had been misfiled :P

And it's normal to mistakenly put the mayo in the pantry and the peanut butter in the refrigerator.... silly mistake. We just laugh about it.

Probably time to have him evaluated by either his PCP, or a neurologist, to find out exactly what's going in with him. Could certainly be the start of any of the dementias, or even a UTI. Always best to know exactly what you're dealing with, so you can then educate yourselves on how best to deal with it. I wish you the best.

Do you have POA? That helps. Also, get a needs assessment to find out what he needs.
