My mom is 90 and extremely "with it." She is slowly losing her sight due to macular degeneration. Any thoughts?

She has recently told me that she has began seeing beautifully colored hearts, as well as balloons. Floating by. What does this mean?

Find a low vision specialist, not just an ophthalmologist or optometrist. They are specially trained optometrists who can help her maximize her sight and recommend special tools to help her. My dad is blind in one eye and has macular degeneration and glaucoma in the other. The tools recommended to him were life savers. You need to do this before she has memory loss so she can learn to use them. Also look online for low vision aids and you'll find talking clocks, big button phones, etc which are very helpful.

Do you know any sites that could explain things? Is there a self-help site or group?
