Medicaid in Maryland?

Is anyone here living in Maryland and has current knowledge of Medicaid rules?

JoAnn29 May 2019
Really, the spouses retirement has to be deminished too? Doesn't really seem fair married or not.

Yes, JoAnne. That is what I have been told. Very unfair

Worried there are LEGAL ways to structure your assets. Have you consulted a lawyer?

Worried; have you consulted with a certified eldercare attorney who is expert in Medicaid in your state?

There ways to deal with this excess asset stuff (Medicaid compliant annuities and the like) but this is NOT a do it yourself process.

Good legal advice costs money because ultimately, it will save you money. Make and appointment and let us know how it goes.

Thank you, BarbBrooklyn, for the link. Very helpful. I was just hoping that my state has changed the rules on asset reduction just like DC. But I guess not.

Hi JoAnn. Thank you for your reply. I am curious to know if Maryland still requires the healthy spouse to spend down his/her retirement before the other spouse could be eligible for Medicaid. My husband’s savings will be depleted in a few years and after that, he will rely on Medicaid for care expenses. I am still working and too young to tap into my retirement money to spend down. The last time I heard, MD requires my retirement to be depleted too because we are married. Is this still the case?

There are members who live in Md but just might not be on the forum right now.

Medicaid is federally funded. As such most of the basic rules for the states are the same. Then States have there own provisions. Like how much they allow in a persons account after spend down.

So as a group, we may be able to answer some of your questions.
