What stage is an Alzheimer's patient when they're pooping on floors?

Jazzy2, it was just a matter of months from the pee/poop everywhere stage to the bedridden stage for my mom.

Three boys, how long was it from the pee/poop everywhere stage to the bedridden/incontinent? I know it's different for everyone---just curious.

Church mouse, would you believe I've done that? The bedside commode is parked in front of the tub each night, blocking his way to the tub! He goes around! I leave the light on where the actual commode is. Last night I threw dark towels in and around the tub. Clean tub. We'll see if that's a permanent fix. I'll also get the red floor rug to put around the commode. I'm sure there is a logical (for him) reason if I could figure it out.

Jazzy, what about putting a commode in front of the bathtub at night? Would there be room?

No curtains on the tub. It's a stand alone. The problem might be that toilet is in separate area " around the bend." I've had door removed from toilet area and even had walls moved to expand area because he was afraid of it. Unfortunately he has to walk past bathing area to get to toilet. I've thought about crime scene tape across the tub. I like the color contrast idea. Maybe a red rug? Of course, we are supposed to remove rugs aren't we? Kss016, I feel for you as I have awakened to puddles and piles all over the house too. Hope you get some answers.

I've also seen that it is helpful to buy a toilet seat that stands out from the toilet and floor. The article recommended red but I can't imagine finding that at the local hardware store.

Jazzy, put a light shining on the toilet, and draw the tub curtains closed. You can buy a toilet seat nightlight.

My husband uses my bathtub on his way to the toilet. This is very upsetting to me as my Epsom salt soak is my main way of relieving stress. Since I have arthritis it is very difficult to scrub that tub every morning. Any ideas? He does this when he in wandering at night.

My mom has had Alz. for about 15 years. She got to the point of pooping and peeing on the floor about 8-10 months ago. She would just pull down her pants and go right in the middle of the floor. It wasn't an incontinence issue--she was just severely confused. When I would catch her I'd say "oh no no, don't go there, let's go to the bathroom," and she'd just snap me "I Am IN The Bathroom!" I think Alz is one of those diseases that has no hard and fast rules--some patients go through the stages faster than others, so one person's story is not necessarily someone else's. But that being said, I think my mother is now near the end stage. Like I said, she's had this for almost 15 years or more now, and just under a year ago, things started going downhill fast. She's now in a nursing home, completely unable to do anything for herself, wears diapers, is completely bedridden and nonverbal.

Are they pulling down their pants and doing this deliberately, or are they having accidents because they can't get to the bathroom in time? The first would need to be tackled with a psychiatric intervention and medication, the second with incontinence supplies and more supervision.
