What can I do when Mom tries to pull out her catheter?

jeannegibbs Apr 2015
My mom had a catheter for a few months, on hospice in a nursing home. She kept pulling it out. I asked that they please keep pajama bottoms on her at all times. That was a little less convenient for the aides who dressed her but it solved the problem 100%. Her hand no longer brushed against the tube taped to leg and she no longer felt compelled to remove it.

When an elderly relative of mine was in the hospital years ago, he had dementia with delusions so bad that he was wild. They had to place his hands on boards and then wrap tape around them in order to keep him from pulling out his catheter and IV lines. Before they did that, he would pull them out before anyone could get to him. I'm not talking a big board, but kind of like a splint. It kept him from using his fingers and making a fist. We eventually had to keep him on 24 hour watch using family members. The hospital just didn't have the personnel to keep him in bed and he was overriding the medicines somehow.

I'm sorry that you are having this problem.
