My dad has VA Aid and Attendance. Can he apply for Medicaid to cover the cost of rehab?

Dad has Parkinsons and dementia, and last week he fell and broke a hip. After three days in the hospital, he was moved to a rehab facility and now I am wondering if he can apply for Medicaid to cover the cost of rehab, and yet still retain the Aid and Attendance should we need to put him an extended care/long-term facility. I am so ignorant of these things. Can you help me?

Typically Medicare--not Medicaid--would cover the rehab costs. In any event, it is possible for a person to have both Medicaid AND VA Aid & Attendance benefits. Since Medicaid covers more of the expenses, it may make sense to pursue his eligibility for Medicaid. In some cases, the A & A payments will be reduced significantly once the individual is qualified for Medicaid.

Aid and attendance is monies for the person helping him ,you or someone that is a caregiver.Get the VA Benefits book from VA it will tell you. Also talk with his VA- Social Worker, you may have to ask at the front desk for book.If you don't know who the worker is then they can assign one This is a great place to start,One of the numbers that you have should have a phone line you can speak
with like a nurse hot line ,any one can lead you to the right person just explain the situation They give you several numbers, start with your local VA first Hope It helps God Bless!
