Most assisted living communities provide respite care all they will charge you is a daily rate like a hotel and it will include any care that is needed and your mom's meals.
Another idea is an in-home caregiver, if it would make your mom more comfortable. You can ask your local agency for the names of agencies, or maybe a hospital social worker, depending on your insurance and location. We have a wonderful caregiver whom I first hired when I wanted to go to my niece's wedding. She left the house cleaner than I clean it, took great care of my husband, and is just a sweetheart. (I now use her any time I have evening activities.) I hired her for a 1/2 day before I left as a kind of trial to see if we liked her, and so I could show her our routine. Not TOO expensive, tho there may be cheaper alternatives.
The adult day care where I take my 95-yr-old aunt gave me a list of "respite possibilities." The one that works best for me bills itself as "senior care with the family touch." Located in a private home, it has alarms on every door, baby monitors in the rooms, and never more than 5 "guests" at a time. The staff has been there forever, they get to know the guests really well - cook them their favorite meals, let them watch their favorite shows, give them their meds, just totally baby them. My aunt loves going there and I don't have to worry about her at all. I take her one long weekend a month and it's the best sleep I get all month. If you can find something like this, go for it. You'll feel a little guilty, and then you're going to feel waaaaay better. Promise.
