So from what I understand she did purchase a pre-paid funeral and plot package some time ago. However, the cost has gone up significantly. And apparently the nursing home purchased a plot at the Cemetery affiliated with the nursing home without permission from the family. The nursing home is claiming not to have kept records since it was like 15 years ago when moved in.
So in the mean time, her daughter, who is also a senior citizen, and can't afford the extra expenses. The grandmother is being held at the mortuary, also affiliated with the nursing home, in the cooler since Mothers Day.
Are there any resource out there in San Diego that can help with this?

Is there a death benefit from social security available? My mom got some money from SS when my father passed.

Its only $252 and I think only spouses get it. Mom got it for Dad but I couldn't get it for Mom.

Explain the situation - they may be able to do the $639. Maybe family members can chip in? I wish I had a better answer.

Have you contacted the pre-paid funeral providers? You may have to phone around to find the one she has policy with but that is probably going to being either within the state or some huge big advertisment running organisation. If it was pre-paid then it should cover the service she purchased not a particular amount. It is certainly not up to the nursing home to purchase a plot and then expect the family to use it unless there was an agreement they should do so - so they can sing for that one, if the plan can be found. I expect they have a high % of residents who have not forward planned and usually their arrangement of plots is useful but one cannot be forced to use it - the claim they have no records is simply unacceptable they have no right to destroy people's medical records so of course they have records, they are not going to go through and throw out just certain pieces of paper they will keep everything. Obviously this is all very distressing for the daughter. Is a consultation with a Lawyer for the Elderly possible?
Most pre-paid funeral plans will provide two copies of all the paperwork - one for the person taking out the plan and one for the next of kin. Does the daughter have this or may she have and have forgotten about it.

If grandmom prepaid a funeral the money should be in a Trust of somekind. The NH would not have this paperwork, the Funeral home who set it up would and the family should have a copy. Even though costs have risen, there may be enough money to cremate. As I said on ur previous post, I have never heard of NH taking it upon themselves to purchase a plot for a resident. They usually have no access to a residents personal funds. If the State took over grandmom's care, then the court assigned a guardian.

If grandmom is on Medicaid, your friend needs to call her mother's caseworker and see if Medicaid will pay towards the funeral but it may only be enough to cremate. She can talk to the Social Worker at the facility and see if the State has a program. A funeral home also should be able to help.

She will probably not get a full blown funeral that costs about 10k. Your friend will have to take what is out there.

I believe every state has an agency that regulates the funeral, insurance, and cemetery businesses. I would contact them for help.

If she prepaid a funeral and plot, then that should be that. I'd assume the money from that prepayment is held in trust earning interest. Why is it not being used? Something sounds fishy there.

Another option would be to call the Neptune Society or any other cremation-only place and see what their lowest cost cremation would be and find out if there's a payment plan available. Scatter the ashes or have Neptune dispose of them.
