My father came to live with me here in Oregon almost 2 years ago after suffering a stroke. Right from the get go I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I have done what I could, but it’s time for both of us to take better care of ourselves. I think he will do better down there with more family and friends able to visit him, and he does better with outside help


We we will be traveling to Southern California in September so he can attend his daughter’s wedding. I want to use this trip (extend if necessary) to get him in AL or a foster home in the Riverside area where his daughter lives. He is on Medicaid and getting Social Security & SSI-A. I am looking for any help/insight on how to streamline the process, or start it before we travel down. I need to make sure this doesn’t take for ever as I am in housing here, and don’t want to lose it.

I would call a few of the AL facilities in the area you want to place him. If possible have family or friends check them out.
If any of them are Corporate and have facilities near you all the better, go in ask to talk to a Social Worker explain the situation they might be able to facilitate a move. But many have only "X" number of beds set aside for Medicaid and there may be a wait list. If you were to get him into one of the facilities now where he currently is that might expedite the move in September. That said moving again is not fun and is very stressful for him as well as you. (Up side it will give you a break for a month or so.)

She can’t get him in to a facility now unless she or another relative can afford to self pay. Her dad is on SSI so he obviously can’t afford to self-pay. California uses a waiver program for AL and it does not cover the entire cost of AL so she needs to find out if her dad can even afford it. Instead if looking for a Medicaid bed, she has to find APPROVED facilities for the assisted living waiver program. Only certain facilities can accept the medi-cal waiver. She also needs to find out if there is a waitlist for the waiver. If there’s a waitlist and there usually is, there will be no expediting the process. While the state did expand the waiver, I am pretty sure there is a still a waitlist and also you must need nursing home level care.

How will he pay for assisted living?Can he self-pay? If he can’t, You’ll have to move him to CA and then apply for medi-cal. He has to be a California resident before he will be eligible for medi-cal. But keep in mind, medi-cal has an assisted living waiver but the waiver and his SS will most likely not be enough to pay for assisted living because the waiver does not cover the cost of room & board. The income limit to qualify for the waiver is also around $1200 a month. Having had a relative move to CA from another state, you really can’t streamline the medi-cal process until he becomes a resident of California.....

also you need to contact riverside county social services to see if there is a waitlist for the assisted living waiver. There usually is one......

Thank you worriedinCali for the info, He definitely can’t self pay. Is that limit a max or minimum of $1200? He should get that or a little more once he moves in CA with his Social Security and SSI. How long did it take your friend to get the help from Medi-cal?


btw, I’m a he, not a she.. ;-)
