She receives her SS direct deposit. However, now I cannot establish the newer login.gov for her because she no longer has a phone, and does not have a credit report, which I understand are the two ways that the new system verifies identity. She is currently self pay in a memory care facility, but my concern is if I need to move her to a nursing home, she will run out of money soon and I will need to apply for Medicaid for her, and some type of on-line verification will be needed. Any advice?

Find Care & Housing
SS recipients receive an award letter every year in December for what their payment will be for the coming year. I think every recipient receives it via US mail.

The annual award letter will be what is needed for an application to Medicaid. Can you locate the original? Hopefully you can locate it in your mother's house.

If you can't find the original and need to obtain a copy on line, Login.gov has an option to choose a list of passwords instead of the phone verification option. 20 one-time passwords are provided, which I printed out and saved, I started using this because the phone verification was no longer an option for verifying. If you go on the login.gov page look down a little further to see the option for the passwords. I'm pretty sure that's where you will find it.

Best of luck.

Thank-you for your responses. I have been frustrated with the SSA's need to verify identity. Example: My mother never got her yearly tax statement from SSA. It probably got misdirected at her facility. I had all staff looking all over for it, never found. If she could establish a login.gov account, we could download a copy. The only other way would her to call SSA, on her own phone and explain the situation, which she cannot. So maybe you all can help me with this question. I am her POA, and I have looked at the Medicaid application. Will the nursing home she is moved to make the arrangements to have her SSA benefit transferred to their facility, or is that something I would have to do as a representative payee? Every call I make to my local SSA office is routed to the main SSA on-line service which currently states they have a high volume calls, and after about 45 min on hold, the caller is directed to call back. They are not taking a phone number and calling back as they have done int he past. Thank-you.

Social Security has nothing to do with Medicaid. Medicaid gets federal funding butbits State regulated.

I prefered to deal with Medicaid directly. Make an appt with a Medicaid caseworker. Mine helped me with the application. Then I was given a list of documents I needed to complete the application. I was not asked for a credit report. You credit rating has nothing to do with applying for Medicaid.

Why are you using SS for all this?
Are you not the POA?
Does she have dementia? Is she able to assign POA?
The POA is able to apply for Medicaid. All you would need is her records, etc. which as POA you would have.

I am unclear what you need, but if you have questions as involves SS call them. If she has dementia and a diagnosis of same you can be made her Representative Payee, but that won't help you in applying fo Medicaid, which is distributed by your state and federal funds.

I would see an attorney for all your legal questions. Elder law is what you are looking for. Good luck.

Before you dive headlong into worrying about verifying her ID, you should first download the Medicaid app to just see what is required. I filled it out for my MIL and SFIL, it's not hard if the person has only SS and no other assets.

You will need access to her bank account or mail to get several month's worth of statements (it's usually 3 of the most recent bank statements). YOu will need to know if she has a car, if she has a house, a spouse, and supply all medical bills that were recently received within the last 3 months of when you apply.

SSN
Address

She doesn't need a PoA or legal guardian to fill out the app when I did it in 2017 for my inlaws in MN. But every state is different. I only had to mark a box that said I was her Representative for the purposes of filling out the app.
