Has anyone taken nitrofurantoin for a UTI? Had any bad experiences?

I just caught a UTI early and was given this, taken first dose, was wondering if anyone else has/had taken and how your body reacted. I know that everyone is different, just curious that is all.

It's always worked for me, without any noticeable side effects. I have chronic G.I. issues, and I've never noticed any effect of nitrofurantoin. When the side effects are listed on the package insert, a frequency is often listed. If a high percentage of people had a particular adverse side effect, the drug would usually not be marketed!

My mum (87) is on it for a UTI - yesterday she was unrecognisable really confused etc - today after 3 doses seems to be working well…… but early days
agree with the previous postings - it depends on infection and what works for each of us
hope it helps and you feel better soon

Looks like from the side effects I would not be able to take it because I have stomach/intestinal problems.

I ask for it by name when I get a uti. It’s the only thing that works for me, with no side effects. Good luck.

Husband was given this. Headaches, exacerbated his sinuses, didn't clear up the UTI properly after 4 months. Asked for a different med and within 2 weeks the UTI cleared up. Anyone he talks to with a UTI says the same, it is ineffective. (UK here).

I took it for a UTI and developed itchy skin and hives. Doctor prescribed a different medicine.

I took one dose and it made me very, very sick. Second dose had me kissing the toilet for three days with no additional doses. Found out I really can't take Macrobid.

On the other hand, my mother was on it for over 8 months for recurrent chronic UTI. She had only mild nausea for the first three days and then was fine and it worked wonderfully.

Roll those dice...

Other than it doesn't work at all for me, no bad side effects. If your bacteria has been cultured, and is susceptible to this drug, it is certainly less of a tough drug to take in terms of side effects than some others (ie Cipro, which I often need). Be sure a culture was run on the bacteria.
