I live in Yazoo City, MS and I have a sister who resides in Chicago, IL. I will be getting a formal diagnosis very soon regarding my sister.

I am no doctor, but it is quite apparent to me that my sister is in severe mental decline. She is extremely paranoid and extremely delusional. She has no family in Chicago and, in my opinion, she needs assisted living badly and urgently. My sister has very limited resources! So, my question is: is there any assistance for people like my sister who is in great need of assisted living but has very limited resources.

There is Medicaid and there are Nursing Homes, but the question is really what diagnosis there is here, and who will handle all that. I can tell you attempting to handle it long distance won't work. If this is mental illness there may be very little help as your sister will have her own rights to act for herself and make her own choices, even if they're bad ones. If it is dementia she may well need to be a ward of the state. I would make that clear to Social Workers, and all involved. You may need to involve APS.

I hope you will update us when you get this diagnosis and hope you will fill us in a bit on who is helping sister in her getting her medical workup.

Report her to APS. If you are not her PoA, and she doesn't have one, and she's paranoid and uncooperative, then no one has any power in this situation except APS. I'm sorry for this distressing situation. Please call and report her to APS today.

Call the Area Agency on Aging nearest your sister. IL does allow Medicaid waivers for ALF if your sister meets financial snd medical criteria from what I read online.

Good luck. I hope you can help your sister soon.
