They had a letter on the receptionist desk about service plans/care levels evaluated quarterly and we’d be notified. We haven’t received any letters/notices about anything. I only saw this letter by chance on the desk. We should be saving $300 every month since she was dropped to Level 1. Now they are saying that Level 1 is $700. What can I do?

I reached out to the business administrator, she said the rates changed in March of this year. I informed her that I wasn’t given anything in writing that detailed this. I’m not the only client that has spoken out. I also asked for the number of their corporate office, and the admin told me she would reach out to see if she couldn’t get more answers. I should be able to call them with any concerns. I also told the admin that anytime there are $$ changes to resident costs, including level of care, is supposed to be given in writing to each resident. I’ve been paying the $700 already for her level 2. But bumping it up to $1100…when the aides ect aren’t doing anything more than what they have been already…..

Agree this is an enormous jump. They may be having to pay more and like all institutions may be unable to keep staff without large bump ups. Hedgefunds and corporations are dropping the nursing homes and ALFs they felt would be so very profitable because they AREN'T anymore. Along with state laws and rules and cost of food and keeping staff they are in deep do-do. You are following up. It is difficult for me to believe there was such an enormous jump in cost of a level of care with no one complaining? Doesn't sound right to me. KEEP ON THEM.

You can check by interviewing the admins as to whether this is the level one set care cost for ALL RESIDENTS. I would get this in WRITING, but a lie would not end well for him/her.

USually the contract you sign on admissions sets out the costs, costs of levels of care and the expected raises, when, why and how. My brother's facility said to expect 3% to 5% yearly unless there were special circumstances. Then there was COVID. You can imagine the extra costs to facility, I think.

Go to admins. Get it set in stone what's happening here. Sounds a bit suspicious on the face of it to be certain.

Nine years ago, my Moms cost for care in her AL was 2k a month. She was level 4. Really, $700 a month does not sound that bad. Based on 30 days, thats $23 a day for care. That could be just for despensing medication.

As Lea says, you need to talk this over with the director. They may now have to pay their aides more to keep them. That cost goes on to the resident. Since COVID there is a shortage of CNAs.

Sorry to say these is how private ALs work. My Mom went into an AL in August by the eoy they upped her rent. You need to read that contract carefully.

You can speak to the Executive Director of this facility directly. Private ALs are within their rights to raise or change rates as they see fit. Check the contract you signed for details.
