If your 82 year old parent lives by themselves are you considered their caregiver?

JoAnn29 Jun 10, 2025
If your Mom is independent and can care for herself, no your not her caregiver. My definition of a caregiver is a person who physically cares for someone. Needs to help them with one or more of their ADLs. Taking my Mom shopping and to appts was gone as a daughter not a caregiver. I did care for her almost 2 years but once in an AL and LTC I was no longer her caregiver. I was her DPOA and ger daughter.

Not sure what you mean by “are you considered their caregiver.”

By whom or in what context? Legally, or in some other setting?

The other question is does this parent need care? do you provide any of the needed care?

Who has legal and medical power of attorney?

Is someone trying to assign you responsibility to some care?

Do you WANT to be the caregiver? If your parent wants to "age in place" then someone has to look after their needs, or they must go into Assisted Living or senior managed care of some kind.

Your question is vague and I can't really answer it. You may want to elaborate or add more details.
