Will medicine work for delusions with a good result?

Dear all,

My dad is nearly 90 years old, he had a major spinal surgery a year ago, recent months he has illusions or delusions, seeing persons in the room, hearing them talking and doing things. His mind is still clear, do calculations, watch tv programs, play cell phone, except some memory degenerations.

Is there any medicine to treat this? I will take him to doctors,,, I read online all of them have serious side effects, anyone have loved ones were given medications from doctors that have good results or there is not much I can do except care-giving tactics.

Many Thanks
Davoti

Are the delusions frightening for your dad? Does he seem upset about them? If he is not upset, perhaps it is best to not Medicate him as the meds will have side effects.
I would let his doctor know and ask for blood work to make sure his sodium isn’t too low or other medical issue that might affect him mentally, that he doesn’t have an infection. Etc.
I hope he is not distressed.

Meds will react differently for everyone. As Geaton says, you should discuss their particular situation with the doctor.

My mom was trying to escape out of the front door in the middle of the night. She was placed on Seroquel and she was able to sleep. She also took Ativan to calm her anxiety.

Best wishes to you and your loved one.

Has he had an exam to discount other causes for this problem?

There are medicines that can help but if you're looking for a "guarantee" that meds will work and that there'll be no side effects, there is none since everyone's bodys are different. Many seniors take other meds for other ailments... this too will impact any treatment. Talk to his primary doctor or take him to a neurologist.
