Is the cost of a geriatric care manager a deductible expense?

I am the health and financial DPOA for my brother, who lives in a RCFE in CA. I live in MA. His dementia is worsening; he no longer reads email or texts or checks voicemail, and often lets his phone go uncharged. I have found a Geriatric Care Manager who lives locally and her help has been essential. She is there with him for doctor visits (in person or video), for instance, and makes sure important health concerns get discussed.

This is my first year helping with his taxes and I am gathering all the info his CPA needs. He has a lot of medical expenses I am compiling for itemized deductions. Could the cost of the Care Manager be one of them?

It will depend on if he has enough medical expenses to deduct. Tak the receipts to the CPA and they can determine.

The Geriatric Care Manager can most likely help in answering this as well. If you are POA and you require a Fiduciary to manage care, then the cost comes out of the funds of the senior you are caring for. That amount is deductible on the seniors taxes but is unlikely to be enough to even figure in taxes, so a CPA can help with this also, as MJ says. DO take all the paperwork for this manager with you when you attend the meeting with the CPA and they can answer this right there and right then. Sure do wish you good luck.

Thank you AlvaDeer. The CPA and my brother are both in CA, so everything is done by phone, mail, and email. We will not be meeting in person. This adds another level of complication to everything! Appreciate your good wishes.

That's a question for the CPA. Just gather up those invoices as well, and present them all to the CPA. If they aren't deductible, he won't put them on the tax return.
