I really need help here. I was hired last year in 2020 for four months to take care of a 91 year old man. By the end I was paid quite a lot, but didn't know until now that I was supposed to pay quarterly taxes, and I never got an ITIN number. I have no idea what to do, or I messed up. I can't reach the IRS due to high call volume and have nobody to help. I can't really afford to pay someone to do my taxes.

Its been said on this forum before that aides are not considered self-employed. Its up to the people hiring you to take out taxes and SS, matching the SS. You may want to check your County Labor board and see how you are considered in ur State.

Ju2174, your not paying quarterly estimated taxes for your 4-month caregiving job might not be a problem. Obviously tax laws can be complicated, but generally if you are not listed as a dependent on someone else's tax return and your total taxable income for all of 2020 was below the standard deduction amount of $12,400, then you may not need to pay any income tax (but you'll still owe self-employment taxes for Social Security and Medicare). Here are a couple of IRS websites that might help you:

Big-name tax preparation companies have offices in and around most major cities and charge a reasonable fee. Don't worry! As long as you get your taxes filed and squared away, you are going to be alright. And they just extended the deadline for individuals to May 17. You have plenty of time. You don't need a TIN number. Your social security number is fine. The government just wants what's owed to them.

My husband was self employed for many years and we used TurboTax - there are other similar programs like it. When you finish with 2020 taxes, it will print out estimated taxes to pay for this year as well if you continue caregiving.

The worst that will happen will be you will have a penalty, but it shouldn’t be too bad if it was only a few months.

If you're a senior, you might be able to get some help through AARP.

One thing you might do just to avoid more complications later is get the basic tax forms and complete them as well as you can, just to get an idea of how much tax you might owe.   Then find the correct form to request an extension, and file it with an estimated amount.   Then you have an option to find someone to help you but at least you've paid something to stave off action for nonpayment of taxes.

This might be a time when you have to bite the bullet and pay to have your taxes done. At this point you can not afford not to pay someone to do your taxes.
(Or possibly one of the Computer programs would guide you through the process. )
This is one of the very reasons that on this forum the majority of people when a question comes up about hiring a caregiver we stress the importance of doing everything "legally" and paying taxes and following proper guidelines. And when people ask about being hired we stress the importance of making sure taxes are taken out.
A ITIN is a tax processing number that is only available for resident and nonresident aliens or others who can not get a Social Security Number. If you have a SS# that would be the number you would use.
