My mom is 91 years old in a nursing home with CHF. Are the doctors allowed to take her off high blood pressure medicine and Furosene?

A couple questions…Is she clear-minded enough to make those decisions herself?

Has she agreed to Hospice? If so, the plan may have included ceasing all medications except for comfort. Furosemide would be considered comfort to relieve the pain of swelling.

And third, if the meds aren't working anymore and her blood pressure is high anyway, they might discontinue those.

Sounds like you need a meeting with her care team.

If they're no longer working, as was the case for my mother, then, yes, that would be indicated.

We took my mom off her BP med when her BP continued to fluctuate in spite of them. We took her off Lasix, too, and a couple others related to her CHF. Her condition actually stabilized somewhat for a while, and her edema went away completely, and then her heart finally gave out as it had been heading for for seven years.

Medicines cannot keep a failing heart going forever.

That's really interesting that going off her meds actually helped her for a bit. I guess it's not really surprising but meds often create side effects and are questionable as to whether they help much, if at all. I wonder that about a few of my mom's meds.

What do you mean, 'are the doctors allowed to take her off high blood medicine and furosene?' What is her care plan at the nursing home? Is she very ill and thought to have 6 months or less to live where hospice is being recommended? If so, some of her meds may be discontinued as a result. Otherwise, a doctor normally discusses a patient's medications with her POA before changes are made. Are you mom's POA? If so, talk to her doctor about what's going on and any concerns you have.

More details are needed so you can be given a lucid answer to your question. You have not filled out your profile at all; doing so would also be helpful.
