What financial benefits are available for me as a caregiver for both of my parents?

I have had to stop working to help my parents.

First thing you need to do is get a job. You’re setting yourself up for financial ruin, even homeless, later on. Why quit your job when you don’t even know if you’ll get any payment for caregiving? You need to make sure YOU will be okay first.

When your parents pass away or have to go to Memory Care, do you plan to pick up where you left off? You’ll be starting anew when your friends are all retiring. The longer you’re not working, it’s more time for people who are way younger to take your place.

Some states have benefits available for full-time caregivers. Medicare and Medicaid are good places to start. You may have to make a difficult decision to either get a new job and hire a nurse or find a nursing home for your parents. For your state, there may be governmental assistance (monthly check) you'd be eligible for.

How will you provide for yourself once your parents are gone and your job skills are gone as well? What about contributing to your retirement? Who'll make up for that loss of income? Who's paying for your insurance?

See how this is a very bad idea?

Just like parents shouldn't sacrifice saving for retirement to finance their children's college educations, neither should you sacrifice your future taking care of your parents. JoAnn is correct -- perhaps you need to look into assisted living for them.

There are really no options which will pay you. Medicaid may but they may not.

Think hard about giving up ur life to care for parents. May be better setting them up in an AL.
