Judilb, the vast majority of family members who take care of love ones do not get paid..... unless that person can pay them from their own retirement fund.
One option is for the person who needs care is to apply and be accepted by Medicaid [which is different from Medicare]. Depending on what State the grandfather resides, will be how much the grandson could be paid. One doesn't need to be certified. Usually the pay is minimum wage for a few hours per week. It's worth a call, as each State has their own program which are paid by the taxpayers.
