What can I give my 92 year old mother who can't swallow pills for terrible headaches that leave her crying and in such distress?

Riverdale Nov 2019
Generic Imitrex is available as a nasal spray or injection form. I can suffer from migraines. These medications work very quickly for most headaches that are an issue with the pain caused by the dilation of vessels.

Over-the-counter pain relief is available in a number of different formulations, including liquids. Ask your pharmacist what might be best for your mother.

More importantly, do you know what might be causing the headaches? Has this been discussed with her doctor?

I believe they are coming from the many strokes she had a year ago.

Have you tried giving the pills in a spoon of applesauce, pudding or jam?
Have you tried warm or cold compresses? Massage? An OTC topical ointment like Voltaren emulgel?

She spits anything out that she feels in her mouth that is not soft.

Suppositories, but not sure that's an easy solution... good luck!

Suppositories are brilliant. Ideal solution to so many problems, such as swallowing difficulties and nausea and damage to the stomach lining, all for the price of a surprised expression on your face for a fleeting moment.😳

Have you talked to her doctor?

He can prescribe something that can be compounded for her in a liquid.

Ask your pharmacist if they do that. They might have a solution that is over the counter.

I use peppermint oil on my neck and hair line, it gets rid of 50% of my headaches, doesn't touch migraines or cluster headaches though.

I hope you find something, they can be shattering for your wellbeing.
