How do I go about becoming a caregiver? My mom needs round the clock care and has MediCare. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Inquiring about the compensated family caregiver.

Medicare won’t pay family caregivers. If your mom is on Medi-cal then she may be eligible for in-home support services (IHSS). Social services will do an assessment and see how many hours she’s qualified for. If she’s eligible, she can hire you. But pay is minimum wage and you won’t be paid to be a full time caregiver.

As far as I know. Medicare doesn’t pay for anything other than Home Health care ordered by a physician. Medicare also pays for skilled nursing rehab facility. This also must be ordered by her doctor.

Home Health provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, a nurse, and sometimes an aide to assist in bathing and dressing. It does not include a sitter.

If you need to look into a sitter please contact your local Council on Aging. There is usually a long waiting list. I waited over a year. I only receive 8 hours of care a month. It isn’t much but it’s better than nothing.

They also have transportation for doctor’s appointments. I have not used that service. I bring mom to the doctor. They can assist in legal help if needed. I haven’t used that service either.

If a person is a spouse of a veteran or a veteran you can see if you qualify for aid and assistance. The maximum amount available to collect as a caregiver is $1209 a month to be used for care. You can use towards assisted living facility or in home care provided by a service such as Visiting Angels, etc.

How sick is your mom? You can also check with hospice to help.

For round the clock care you may also want to inquire about a nursing home or an assisted living if it’s applicable.

Hope this helps. Best wishes to you.

I see you're in California. I believe CA does have a program to pay caregivers for Medicaid patients. Is your mom on Medicaid?

Guestshopadmin Aug 2019
Medicare does not have that program. Check into MediCAID in your state if your parent qualifies.
