My mom is in a nursing home in Texas. I want to transfer her to a nursing home in Ohio. Where do I start?

Her insurance is Medicare and Medicaid. What do I need to do to start this process?

I'd start with the admissions team at the nursing home I wanted to transfer my mother TO. It's in their interest to be helpful, after all, and they should know the process.

This website also has important tips to pass on:

It's hard because as others have said you need to apply in the new state. I believe that you can't apply until she is physically in the state. So you would need to either place her in a nursing home in Ohio and private pay for it while the medicaid is pending there or bring her into your home for awhile. Once approved, it should be retro'd back and the facility could give you a refund. Depending on her physical abilities, transporting might be hard. Insurance will not cover the transport. I love the idea of an RV that someone suggested....if she could get up the stairs! But there are the ones for utility vehicles that have a ramp, along with a bed!

I agree, u need to talk to Medicaid Ohio. Medicaid is State run and doesn't go over state lines.

Then there is transporting her. We planned on transporting my MIL from Central Fla to Atlanta and the cost would have been 2k. Plane, if incontinent not a good idea. Would be very hard getting 2 people in that little bathroom. Someone had suggested renting an RV.

I would call Ohio's public assistance and ask them how they require you to do this.

Mac good question about transport, that can be excessively expensive and it is not covered.

You need to apply for Medicaid in Texas. Her Medicaid in Ohio isn’t transferable, it can’t be used outside of Ohio. Maybe the social worker at her current nursing home can help? She needs to be approved for Medicaid in Texas and you have to find a facility with a Medicaid bed available.

Reverse that, no? Her mom’s already on Medicaid in Texas.
