What is the process of paying a family member to be the caregiver of mom at home?

lolson, the vast majority of family caregivers do not get paid.... unless your Mom can pay from her savings account. As mentioned earlier, one would need to draw up an Employment Contract.

Try to limit the limit the number of working hours to only 8 to 12 hours per day. Otherwise the caregiver will burn out very quickly, and you are back to square one.

Another possibility is to contact your State Medicaid [which is different from Medicare] office to see if your Mom would qualify to be on Medicaid, and ask what programs the State offers when it comes to paying a caregiver. These programs vary from State to State. So does the pay and the number of hours one can be paid. Some States will not pay a family caregiver if the caregiver lives under the same roof as Mom, other States will. It's worth a telephone call.

Is the person a veteran? You may be able to apply for aid and assistance and use that money towards caregivers.

First make a contract. Spell out duties and pay. This is necessary to protect everyone should Medicaid become involved....need to prove where the money was spent.

contact one of the many payroll companies....it will cost very little to have them process the payroll for just one person....they will handle all the withholding, etc.

then...proceed to sign the contract and you are set to go.
