What causes swollen lips in the elderly? And what do I do?

My mum is 93 and in very good health apart from mild asthma. She's not on any medication at all. Her lips are swollen and a deep pink colour. She also tires out more easily since this started.

Living here in the desert, the early sign of serious dehydration are widely known.

First sign is headaches, next come swollen lips.
check by doing a soft pinch on her lower arm...does the skin go back immediately or is the slight hump caused by the pinch lingering?

I'm not saying that is the case here, but make sure she is getting enough liquids.

When did this start?

We're not medically qualified, but what you're describing sounds as if it could be quite serious and if it's a sudden change it needs urgent medical attention. It could be an allergic reaction to something she's eaten, drunk or come into contact with but it could anything so please don't take my word for it. If you're in the UK, have you tried calling your GP or the NHS helpline for advice?
