I am my husband's sole caretaker. Can I deduct anything on our income taxes for this?

Tothill Feb 2019
If you are in Canada, then yes, there is some help on income taxes when looking after a dependent spouse. There are also quite a few medical expenses you can claim as well.

But if it is the first year claiming these, things your best bet is to have your taxes prepared by a professional at least the first couple times. That way if the tax dept audits you (more likely in the beginning), you will have a professional backing you.

It doesn’t sound like the OP is asking if she can claim her husband as a dependent. She’s not asking if she can claim a caregiving tax credit either. There ARE deductions she may be able to claim related to taking care of him such as unreimbursed medical costs and mileage to medical appointments. The answer here is NOT necessarily NO and it’s not necessarily YES. She needs to speak to a CPA. No one here can give a yes or no answer because we don’t know her tax situation.

Like said, a question for your tax preparer.

To be honest, if its the time you spend caring for him, probably no. This is part of the marriage vows. In sickness and in health.

Please come back and tell us what you found out. This question has been asked before and not sure if it ever got answered.

That is really a question for your tax accountant. There are a lot of new changes this year with personal deductions.
