Anyone have tips for finding care that takes Medicaid?

Does anyone have tips on how to find a nice assisted living unit that takes Medicaid? So far I've been shot down on every level and am getting discouraged.

Issybeau, check with your State Medicaid office to see if the State offers a waiver. A waiver will help pay part of the monthly Assisted Living fee, and the patient would need to pay for the rest.

You could also try calling your local Agency on Aging to see if they have a list of Assisted Living facilities that does take Medicaid.... if there are such places, don't be surprised if there is a waiting list. Now, if you do find a place, the facility would need to assess your Mom's condition to see if they can give her the right care.

Sometimes a skilled nursing home is the best bet depending on your Mom's condition with Alzheimer's/Dementia.

Even way out here in the west the few ALs that took Medicaid have quit in the last year or two. No options except NH here, either...

In my area, Medicaid does not cover assisted living at all. Medicaid only covers a traditional nursing home room with a roommate. I initially was asking about Medicaid and assisted living, but I kept getting the blank stare from anyone I asked until someone finally told me that Medicaid does not cover it. Turns out my loved one could not live in assisted living anyway due to her multiple health concerns, so it really didn't matter to us in the end, but it was nice to get the clarification.

Issy, in my area in central NY virtually no AL takes Medicaid. Some websites may list them as Medicare/Medicaid, but by visiting them I found only a few may have a couple of Medicaid beds, but generally scoffed at me when I inquired about it, due to the long wait times.  It’s a question you may need to call your local facilities directly about. I know it’s discouraging. It was a rude awakening when I started looking for help for Mom.
