How do I transport my parent long-distance to a new facility? Driving my car is not an option.
My parent has mobility issues and cannot use stairs. They also need frequent bathroom breaks, which will make the 8 hour trip by car infeasible. This will be a one-time move to a memory care facility closer to me.
Cautionary tale; I volunteered to drive my mom from subacute rehab to a lovely Assisted Living Facility close to brother's home. Explained all this to mom beforehand. We thought that the psychiatric symptoms were seeing were "just" because she was in rehab. (cut to the chase, they were not. They were a permanent feature of vascular dementia)
Picked mom up in my familiar car. Had her sit in the front seat with DH. 5 minutes in, she grabbed the steering wheel, weeping, crying, hysterical. DH, God bless him, just got through it.
Got out of the car at the AL and told POA brother; "I'm never, EVER putting mom in my car again. Just so you know".
I agree, medical transport but I doubt that they would be stopping frequently for bathroom breaks. Too many obstacles when out on the road.
You might have to send along male and female urinals with them. I would also have them in adult diapers on the day of the move.
I'm not advocating dehydrating them, but if they could not drink too much after 6 pm the night before the trip, that would lessen the amount of urine build up.
Call the transport company and ask how they would handle an 8 hour trip with elderly, demented people who need to toilet frequently.
We needed to transport MIL from FLA to GA a 6 or 7 hour drive at the cost of about 2000. I would not take a person who needs Memory Care on a plane. Those bathrooms are tiny as it is. No way could you get two people in them.
