Can someone please share how to qualify for Medicaid for Mom?

She does not own a home and has no assets other than a checking account with very little in it, however she lives with me and my family. So do our incomes come into play in this equation? I have tried calling the local Area Agency on Aging to get some additional information however it seems virtually impossible to get an actual person to speak to. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I have never heard of any state that looks at the tax returns of the children to qualify for Medicaid for their parent. You definitely need to research that information. You can look up the rules in your state on the internet. Good Luck

Maine127, I thought that you were in Maine from your name. However, I would still with the Department of Human Services. Even though she lives with you, you are not responsible for her nursing homes costs, unless you've taken legal financial responsibility for her. You also could contact the Legal Aid office in your area. They can provide professional advice and assessments for free or very low cost.

Thanks for the info but I am thinking I may need to get an attorney involved which we really do not have the $$$ for but we are being told that being she lives with us our income counts as what would have to be paid to the nursing home facility. We live in PA and they are requiring that we submit our tax info for them to review. Ugh this is just really frustrating!!

In Maine you can visit the Dept of Human Services to apply. Be sure she has her social security card, driver's license or state ID, and proof of income. You will also need to take two years of bank statements. Or you can apply on line and then as they process the application, they will ask you to mail in various documents. I've found it easier to go to the local office to apply. Local Agency on Aging can't do much to help you with Medicaid. If you're mother is on Social Security and applying for Medicaid for health coverage and is below a certain income, Medicaid may pay her Medicare premium so that she will receive the amount of her Medicare premium in her social security check. Be sure to ask about this, they will not offer this information. If she is applying for Medicaid to go into the nursing home, it tak 3-6 months to get approved or denied.
