Is it a good idea to prepay your funeral arrangements?

Shane1124 Sep 2017
Prepaying and planning for my mother's funeral in advance was the best thing we did. In the end when she passed everything went very smoothly for us. She passed at 3am, the funeral home staff had her picked up and taken there in less than 3 hrs.
We were absolutely numb after she passed. I wholeheartedly suggest prepaying. It's the last thing you want to worry about when your loved one passes away.

My Mom had two small policies $1000 and $5000. They were not stipulated for funeral expenses so I cashed them in and prepaid her funeral. The money was put in a trust ok'd by Medicaid. When u set u a policy you need to stipulate it's for a funeral.

Absolutely--and the sooner the better. Besides the hassle that is Medicaid, it is just easier for your family if you have all your wishes written down, paid for and organized. Then all they have to do is follow your instructions.
A death in the family throws everyone for a loop--but if these crucial details are dealt with, your family will be ever so grateful!

I don't have much info about Medicaid itself--so I can't address that.

After applying for and receiving Medicaid for my mom in the nursing home..found out if she just has a whole life insurance policy that has cash in value (term life has no cash value) and funeral arrangements r not prearranged with making funeral home owner of the policy...(luckily my mom prearranged) Medicaid can make you cash in the policy as they consider it to b money she can obtain that she could pay them...if it's prearranged with funeral home owning policy no worries...just don't transfer ownership to you from your mom to you or Medicaid can view that as a gift from your mom...and be penalized for it..sorry so long I just received my moms Medicaid card today (after filling out all paper work myself..pain in the arse..they're always asking for more info) so I have learned a lot about Medicaid...made me want to scream..😫

My parents both prepaid for cremation services. It made my life much easier when they passed away and I knew what they wanted in the way of services (none). The only glitch was in the 8 years since my dad died, the quality of the cremation company's services went down significantly. I wasn't happy about that but was happy that I didn't have to figure out that part of the transition when they passed away. It's already an emotional time and having one less thing to worry about is good.

It can be - especially if Medicaid or long term care is on the horizon. Make sure that any prepaid arrangements are Medicaid compliant. Most funeral home directors are getting familiar with the requirements for their state.
