How do you handle these kinds of situations when your loved one gets paranoid?

My 88-year-old dementia mother lives with me, but when she is in the zone, she gets paranoid and says things to people like we are trying to poison her for her money. It is frustrating to hear that every day.

Get her seen by a geriatric psychiatrist, asap!

Thanks 97yroldmom, yes I have try to talk softly letting her know she is safe. But my mother has live by herself for over 25 years in a state where we have absolutely no family and we don't even stay close. There she was a paranoid alcoholic and refused to come stay with one of us until she got sick and had no choice. She was depending on a couple of guys that we feel persuaded her about a lot of things. Now she is with me and I don't drink or smoke, so when she is in another world everyone is out to get her. The physician have seen her and she is on anxiety meds and low dose sleep meds. dementia is strong and she jumps up sometimes as if she can walk, but falls all the time. She is in the latter stages of dementia, and has a team of doctors. This behavior just came on and I'm trying to figure out her trigger.

What have your tried lately? Has she been in recently to see her neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist? Has she been tested for a UTI? Have you looked up Teepa Snow videos online? She gives excellent advise on diverting the conversation.
Most likely your moms dementia will take on a new focus in the future and she will forget all about poison. But do make sure she is getting the benefit of medical care that might lessen her anxiety of being poisoned and give you a bit more control of daily issues.
